# Domains

Every site answers at `<slug>.atelier201.page`. A Site can also answer at your own
domain. It holds up to 3 addresses (for example `www.example.com`, `example.com`
and an older domain), and all but the main one redirect to it. A draft has no
custom domain.
Connecting or removing a domain needs the `domains:write` scope and a workspace
admin.

## Connect a domain

Use a subdomain such as `www.example.com`. It is the reliable choice. An apex
domain such as `example.com` depends on what your DNS provider supports.

1. Add the domain in the app (**Domains**), with `atelier201 domains add`, or with
[Connect a domain](/docs/api/domains/add). Atelier201 records it and returns the
   DNS records to create.
2. Create those records at your DNS provider:
   - a **TXT** record that proves you own the domain;
   - a **CNAME** record that points the domain at Atelier201.
3. Check the domain. Atelier201 also checks every 5 minutes by itself.

Copy the record names and values from the response or the app, never from
another site: they are specific to your domain. Nothing is routed until the TXT
record is seen. This is deliberate. Nobody can claim a domain by declaring it.

## States

A domain moves forward on its own once the records exist.

| State | Meaning |
| ------------------- | ------------------------------------------------------------ |
| `pending_ownership` | Waiting for the TXT record. |
| `provisioning` | Ownership is proven. Atelier201 is issuing the certificate. |
| `active` | The site answers on this domain over HTTPS. |
| `error` | Something failed. The `error` field of the domain says what. |
| `removing` | The domain is being disconnected. |

DNS changes can take time to spread. If a domain stays in `pending_ownership`,
check the records at your DNS provider first. See
[Troubleshooting](/docs/platform/troubleshooting).

## Choose the main address

When a site has several addresses, one is the main address. Visitors of the
others are redirected to it, and canonical links and the sitemap use it.
Choosing a new main address starts a rebuild, because those links are written at
build time. Publish that build to finish.

## Remove a domain

The site stops answering on the domain within about a minute. Its
`atelier201.page` address keeps working.
